  • calender 01.06.2017

Green roofs changes from exclusive and inaccessible technology to more common practice in urban space. The parks on the roofs are installed around the world not only in private villas and cottages, but also in shopping and office centers, abandoned industrial zones and other urban buildings. There are a number of countries in the world, where the population are encouraged to the greening of the roofs of buildings through the legislation.

In 2015, a law, under which the roofs of new commercial buildings should be planted greenery or installed solar panels, was passed in France. In Toronto, Canada, the similar law has been in force since 2009. In Singapore, another rule has been introduced: around the new building the builder must land as many trees as it was cut off during the work. Therefore, there are a lot of green roofs and vertical gardens in the city.

The greening of roofs in Germany is a popular and widespread practice. Actually, in the sixties the modern technology of planting trees on the roofs was developed. Green roof allows you to have a garden in a limited area of land. Gardens and parks can be created both on parking lots and on roofs of houses in the most loaded areas of the city.

We suggest to look at objects with green roofs in the world.

Industrial roofs of Stuttgart

The German company ZinCo set up genuine gardens with green lawns and varied plants on the roof of the shopping center with an area of 8,000 square meters not far from Stuttgart in Heislingen. Due to the innovative drainage system the implementation of the project became possible. The roof was able to integrate into the urban environment. It is low, therefore stairs, ramps and elevators were equipped and the town citizens got a new inclusive (accessible) public space with green lawns and playgrounds. There is a green roof of the insurance company WGV -Versicherungen, created using Stabilodrain drainage technology in the central part of Stuttgart.

California Academy of Science

The "Green roof" of the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco was designed by the architect, Renzo Piano. Only aboriginal plants were used for planting, each of the plants performs a certain function. One group of plants is specifically designed to create favorable conditions for the rare species of butterflies, Euphydryas editha bayensis. Fruits of Chilean strawberries are attracted to local birds; the black-headed bear usually has flowers that haul bumblebee and hummingbird.

The plants, which do not require watering with drinking water, were mostly selected for drought resistant plants. The greened part of the roof, with the area of one hectare, is the largest plot with autophonic plants in San Francisco. Thanks to the green roof, a lot of precipitation is delayed, about 9.5 million liters of water per year. It becomes possible due to the drainage system with cells, which are capable to absorb up to 98% of rainwater.

Center of creative services in Latvia

A center for providing creative services with an area of 4400 square meters was built in the city of Rezekne, under the order of the local municipality. The green roofs serve as extension to the surrounding landscape. The area around the center is made of concrete and covered with grass.

Thus, despite the large area, the center is cozy for the person and is compatible with the historic buildings in the area.

City farm on the roof of a chocolate factory in Dublin.

The farm opened in 2012 at the hub of the creative industry Chocolate Factory. In addition to Urban Farm, there were photo studios, recording studios, design teams, theatrical corpses, and so on at various times.

On the basis of the project the organizers were engaged into the education of the Dublin citizens.

They held seminars and workshops on horticulture, responsible for raising food, energy-saving technologies, ecological cycles and sustainable development. By combining urban farming and innovative educational technologies, the organizers of Urban Farm want to teach as many people as possible to the technology which enables them to live in a more environmentally friendly, economical and sustainable way. So, the cultivation of plants and animals for consumption is combined with the experimental and educational process.

There are plenty of areas in Kyiv, including industrial facilities, where you can create public spaces, make them comfortable and comfortable to use. One way is to set up a "green roof". Despite the fact that this is not a cheap technology, in the long run, such a solution becomes economically profitable.
